Calendula (Pot marigold)
Considered as the typical plant for the beauty of the skin, in preparations for external use has an excellent cleansing and dermaprotective action. The essential oil exerts a regenerating action on the skin. This is useful to nourish and moisturise the skin of the face and body. Preparations on Calendula basis improve the balance of the skin hydration and cell regeneration, blood circulation and skin tone.
Hyssop
It 's a perennial herb with a characteristic strong aromatic smell, the flavour is sharp and bitter. In cosmetics it can be used as antimicrobial and antiseptic, also note its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory action.
Hyssop can be used for stimulating baths and lotions for toning the eyelids and cheeks and to decongest irritated skin, its anti-inflammatory action relieves pimples.
Imperatoria
(Agrou valdostano in dialect) it usually grows between 1300 and 2500 m above sea level, is found in acidic soils, in moist soils of alpine pastures meadows, along streams, is a widespread plant throughout the Valle d'Aosta. For external use only Imperatoria is a useful anti-inflammatory that soothes the itching and reduces redness of the skin of external mucous.
In cosmetics its riepitelizzanti, bacteriostatic and antioxidant properties are really appreciated.
Edelweiss
It grows in stony pastures and on rocky cliffs of limestone up to three thousand meters of altitude. For this reason, it has developed a covering of hair that can help it to withstand the hard cold, avoiding excessive water loss and protecting it from ultraviolet rays of the sun at high altitudes.
In plants, a high level of phenolic acids and flavonoids with antioxidant effect is a specific defence mechanism against UV solar radiation. Just for the content of these substances, combined with the rich in mucilage, soothing and softening effect, the Edelweiss recently came in the sphere of plants of cosmetic interest.
Among the identified molecules we have:
- Chlorogenic acid, which is expressed by inhibition of lipid peroxidation and protection of collagen type III.
- Luteolin-4'-O-glucoside, apigenin-7-glucoside, luteolin, of the flavonoids family, act on capillary permeability and improve peripheral blood circulation bringing more oxygen to tissues; they are also able to block the formation of free radicals and they have protective action against the sunlight.
- Derivatives of bisabolani, tannins with anti-inflammatory activity, for inhibition of hyaluronidase and lipid peroxidation.
- Beta-sitosterol, phytosterol with anti-inflammatory activity.
Thymus
The thymus is an evergreen plant, the tops of flowers and leaves are used. The name comes from Greek "Thymos ", to perfume. The leaves and other portions of the Thyme herbs are used in phytotherapy, cosmetics, and as a condiment for food. The essential oil is reddish in colour with yellow gradients. The essence has, among its components, thymol which is the most 'abundant (up to 55%) and other volatile compounds such as geraniol, terpineol, cymene, linalool, camphene, borneol. The thymus has been shown to possess even a high antibacterial activity. The Valle d'Aosta ecotype is a chemotypes of thymol, with a strong antiseptic action.
